Despair and Hope Around the World

The last few articles I’ve written have taken a step away from my usual content. On a website devoted to divulging the joys and adventures of world travel, I don’t feel comfortable posting articles focusing on my own happy travels when so many awful things are happening all over, at home and abroad. Just today, another attack has occurred. This time (I hate that I even have to use the phrase ‘this time’) the attacks took place in Turkey, in Ataturk airport. 38 people have been killed and 140 injured, at the latest count. It is thought that Daesh is responsible. It is horrendous how common this kind of tragedy has become, and I’m going to assume I’m not alone in despairing. The world is in mourning.

I’m determined not to lose hope, however. I myself am not intelligent or articulate enough to phrase the rousing and uplifting speech I wish I could, so I’ll leave it to the late, great Charlie Chaplin. You’ve probably seen this video before. It doesn’t matter. It will never stop being relevant. To paraphrase the essence of this speech:

Keep your chin up. Things will get better.
